2004 DATA SYNOPSIS

Data was collected as part of basin wide synoptic grab sample events in May, July and September.  All three sample events included the following parameters: temperature, pH, dissolved oxygen, conductivity and pathogens.

Pathogen analysis at the locations varied somewhat with e coli data collected in May and September and fecal coliform data collected in July.  Field observations were generally made for stream flow, turbidity, and rainfall.  In addition, there were additional parameter selected based on seasonal priority. These are detailed below.

The spring event occurred on May 8th with a total of 65 sites reporting. All sites were analyzed for the following herbicides: triazine, metolachlor, acetochlor and glyphosate.  Triazine and glyphosate were the most commonly detected herbicides and were found in about one-third of the samples.  In addition, a few selected sites were analyzed for estradiol 17B, with 10 sites indicating the presence of this compound. All sites were also analyzed for pathogens with a total of 18 exceeding the Kentucky surface water standard of 240 CFU/100ml for e. coli. The summer event occured on July 24th with a total of 64 sites reporting.  Of these sites 16 were found to be exceeding the Kentucky surface water standard of 400 CFU/100ml for fecal coliform bacteria. The complete data set for this event can be viewed at this link.

The fall event during the period of September 17th thru 28th with a total of 50 sites reporting.  This sample event was significantly affected due to the impacts from Hurricane Ivan which cause heavy rainfall.  Several results were lost either to transportation issues or to hazardous access to sample sites.  Almost all sites that reported were found to be exceeding the Kentucky surface water standard of 240 CFU/100ml for e. coli. Additionally, sites were analyzed as part of a low flow sample suite that included: sulfates, chlorides, alkalinity, hardness, conductance, nitrate-N(NO3-N), total nitrogen, total recoverable phosporus, and total suspended solids.  The complete data set for this event can be viewed at this link.
